About Mica
Mica refers to a group of minerals characterized by perfect basal cleavage, allowing them to split into thin sheets. Naturally occurring in nine species, the two commercially significant types are Muscovite (aluminum potassium mica) and Phlogopite (aluminum magnesium mica). Mica is commonly found in igneous, metamorphic, and detrital sedimentary rocks, especially within pegmatite formations like granite.
In nature, Muscovite mica can appear in various shades such as white, silver, green, or brown, often exhibiting a vitreous to pearly luster. The cleaved sheets are noted for their optical clarity—higher transparency being a sign of higher quality.
Properties
Muscovite mica plays a critical role in the electrical industry, primarily due to its combination of physical, chemical, and thermal properties. It offers low power loss, a stable dielectric constant, and strong dielectric strength. Additionally, mica is fireproof and highly resistant to acids, oils, solvents, and atmospheric acids, making it remarkably durable.
Muscovite boasts a high dielectric strength, capable of withstanding voltages between 1,000 and 1,500 volts per mil of thickness without puncturing. It also features a low power factor (with a high Q factor between 0.01 and 0.03%). Mica is resistant to temperatures between 500-700 degrees Celsius (up to approximately 1300°F). Beyond 700°C, it may begin to calcine and lose its water crystallization depending on its quality.
When dry-ground, mica forms a non-lustrous product with high delamination and a high aspect ratio. Wet grinding, on the other hand, produces thin, flat platelets with high luster and slip.
Aside from its visual appeal, mica serves a range of practical applications. It is widely used to reinforce plastics, prevent cracking, and reduce warpage in thin plastic products. Mica’s high aspect ratio enhances gas and moisture barrier performance, making it essential in various industries. It also improves rheology and ensures smooth application conditions.
